Background
LuxStay is a premium hotel booking platform focusing on boutique and luxury properties across Asia. The existing app felt generic and failed to convey the premium nature of the properties listed on the platform.
Problem Statement
Core issues discovered through competitive analysis and user testing:
- The booking flow had a 6-step process — industry best practice is 3 steps
- Property photos were displayed in low quality with poor layouts
- No personalization — every user saw the same generic recommendations
- Payment integration was limited to credit cards only
Design Process
1. Competitive Analysis
Analyzed 8 leading hotel booking apps including Booking.com, Airbnb, and The Hotels Network. Key insight: the most successful apps invest heavily in visual storytelling through immersive photo galleries.
2. Visual Language
Developed a warm, luxurious visual language:
- Color palette: Deep navy, warm gold accents, cream backgrounds
- Typography: Serif headings for elegance, sans-serif body for readability
- Photography: Full-bleed hero images with cinematic cropping guidelines

3. Streamlined Booking Flow
Redesigned the checkout from 6 steps to 3:
- Select dates & room — combined into a single interactive screen
- Guest details — smart form with autofill and past booking data
- Payment & confirm — added Apple Pay, Google Pay, and local payment methods

Results
After launch in Q1 2024:
- Booking completion rate increased from 23% to 51%
- Average time to complete booking reduced by 45%
- User satisfaction (NPS) increased from 32 to 67
- Revenue per session increased by 34%
